Article of the Month - November 2006
Today, the newspapers and television are inundated with advertisements offering solutions to all manner of financial problems. The shops are beginning to fill up with Christmas fare and the demands and expectations of friends and family can leave one feeling low about not being able to afford gifts or tempted to spend more than one can afford.
If credit cards are spent to their limits and the overdraft is scarily large, then stress builds about how one can pay this money back. Also, feelings of guilt about getting into this position mount. Add to this the bombardment of television programmes and magazine articles featuring excessive and happy spending by seemingly everyone else can leave one feeling the sting of not being able to afford such items.
The feelings of dread when faced with the morning post or when the telephone rings can leave one drained. Financial worries do not only take their toll on the mind, but also on the body. The mind takes a battering. Due to this, the body can experience a drop in its immune capability. The appetite may be reduced leading to less nutritional resources in the body and illness can occur.
Overspending from a homoeopathic viewpoint can be a symptom of either one of a combination of the following:
- peer pressure
- seeking to find something to fill an emptiness inside
- an addiction to shopping
- a desire to please others by purchasing them things one cannot afford
- a desire for items regardless of the price – a desperate need to suppress real feelings by purchasing items could be for the ‘high’ of the purchase itself or because there is a belief that this item will provide some level of happiness or satisfaction.
Financial worries can also occur due to a loss of job, income, death of the main breadwinner, divorce, poor investments, gambling, etc. This is a different situation to the above, but some may use shopping as a feel good exercise to get away from having to face a new financial situation.
Regardless of the reason why there are financial worries, there is help out there. Look at the list below for links. It does not matter how the debt came to be, the important thing is to do something positive about it. Make a start by looking at some of the below or just pop into your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
