Homoeopathy Essentials For The Ski Holiday

Whether you are a skier, boarder or a snow sport junkie, you know what a toll it takes on the body. Homoeopathy can help you to deal with altitude, cramping, lactic acid build-up and injuries.

Preparation Preparation

The most common injuries that skiers experience are knee related. Ligament strain and/or tearing are very common (I should know, having just had one which inspired this article!). Get your body in shape with good leg exercises to strengthen the muscles and support the joints. Learn to breathe properly as the thinner air at altitude can take a toll on the body, especially if you are undertaking strenuous activity.

Good quality nutrition, as usual, is essential:
  • A good, healthy diet with plenty of water for hydration.
  • A good quality multivitamin and mineral complex from Viridian (High Five), Higher Nature or other reputable suppliers
  • Essential fatty acids, I like Udo’s Choice best.
  • For joint health: Higher Nature’s MSM Glucosamine Joint complex or Viridian’s Glucosamine Chondroitin Complex
You can order the above from the Nutricentre (www.nutricentre.com, telephone: 020 7436 5122). I can now offer my clients/readers 10% discount when they make an order with Nutricentre. Contact me to find out more.

Hard fall – arnica 30C or 200C for more severe pain/injury

Knee injury – Narayani Knees Mix 40 and OM 16, Narayani Injury or Skeletal combinations. If you don’t have these lovely remedies, then arnica (for the blow, pain, and muscle damage), ruta grav (for the connective tissue surrounding the joint, including ligaments and tendons) and rhus tox (for the joint tissue and ligaments) will also help. Helpful adjuncts include remedies made from healthy tissue (called sarcodes) like connective tissue, ligaments, synovial membrane, etc.

Oxygen deprivation – carbo veg 30C to help keep the blood oxygenated, esp. if there is faintness, paleness and debility. Take it as 6C as a preventative and to keep your blood oxygenated.

Altitude sickness – Coca 30C or 200C if there is exhaustion, palpitations, anxiety, headaches and/or difficulty breathing due to the altitude.

Lactic acid build-up – use the homoeopathic remedy lactic acid in low potencies like 6C, sip in water during the evening. A sauna, massage or hot applications such as a warm bath or a hot press on the muscle stimulates the circulation and helps to get rid of lactic acid.

Aches and pains – arnica 30C

Cramps – Mag phos tissue salts from New Era, great in warm water and indicated especially after prolonged exertion. Cuprum met 30C is another excellent calf cramp remedy, esp. for those with violent cramping and that scream in the pain. Secale cor. is another good one for calf, leg, foot and hand cramps. Look for tingling and numbness with it and/or coldness of limbs.

For lax muscles with weakness and trembling, try gelsemium 30C. Excellent if the person has little energy, feels drowsy and droopy. The body will feel heavy and may ache.

Help after injury Help after injury

If you have suffered an injury, medical care is important. There are several homoeopathic remedies that you can use to help with pain management that are less toxic than over the counter and prescribed medication. If necessary, see a physiotherapist as they can advise on exercise and what you need to do to regain your former health and mobility. Use nutrition (as described in preparation) to help provide the body with the raw materials needed for repair and regeneration. New Era Tissue Salts such as calc fluor and silica are wonderful for joint, bone and ligament injuries. A kinesiologist can also help you with pain management and ‘programming’ the body into healing.

If you wish to purchase any of these remedies, Narayani combinations or ask me for a tailor made combination remedy, please contact me or visit my Purchase Remedies page.
