Article of the Month - March 2007
March heralds springtime for many and is traditionally the time to come out of hibernation, not that we have that kind of luxury nowadays, and start cleaning our homes and getting busy.
The calendar reflects so many March events:
- We’re into Lent now, with Christians reflecting on their lives, promises and faith. The 40 days of Lent occur between Ash Wednesday and Easter, with Christians fasting from food and festivities, marking the 40 days of sacrifice that Jesus made in the desert.
- There are days celebrating saints, such as St David, St Piran and St Patrick.
- We also have Mothering Sunday on the 18th, where we show our love and appreciation to mothers.
- We have the Hindu celebration of Diwali and the Hindu Spring New Year. Traditionally, deeyas (small clay pots) are filled with oil and wicks are lit celebration the goddess of light, good health and prosperity.
- International Women’s Day is on the 8th March, celebrating the achievements of women who have come through so much repression, suppression and lack of equality. Even today, there is still some disparity in salaries and discrimination still exists.
- We also have Purim on the 5th, which commemorates the time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination by the courage of a young Jewish woman called Esther.
- Some Muslims celebrate the birthday of Prophet Mohammed, the date varies.
- We have red nose day on the 16th, and it is a time when we are encouraged to think about the needs of others and to raise money to help. However, it doesn’t have to be a solemn or sad affair. You can still be happy while respecting and trying to meet the needs of others less fortunate.
- March 21st is also the spring equinox, when the duration of the day and night are exactly the same. This has huge significance in the Druid calendar, paganism and other religions.
- There are many other religious dates during this month, such as Shinto’s day for visiting graves, Zoroastrian New Year’s Day, annunciation, the birthday of Lord Rama, etc.
The month of March seems have themes of the sacrifice, reflection, celebration, giving to and respecting others, and recognising the changing seasons on earth. The latter is particularly important as our bodies hold a primal affinity to the workings and change of earthly seasons.
What are your plans for March? Are you commencing your spring cleaning? Are you fasting? Now is the perfect time for detoxification, and you can read all about that in my January 2006 article. Having reviewed it, there is nothing new to add except do not be put off detoxing after the TV programme, The Truth About Food. No mention of fibre was made or how the body was to eliminate toxins without some help. Do you need to detoxify? Well, if you regularly inhale or ingest dust, chemicals, pollutants, etc., then you probably do. If you have been on medication for a long time, then your liver and kidneys could probably use a boost. If you have suffered a lot of stress for prolonged periods, then a detox will help your body deal with the toxic load created by the metabolic response to stress. I like nux vomica 6C at night and carbo veg 6C on mornings for two weeks.

How about reflection? Meditation is an excellent way to clear the mind and find out what is really going on in your own mind. By focussing on a particular issue, be it religion, personal development, etc, you can monitor where you are and where you aim to go. If you wish to focus and have a clear mind, then I would suggest some either:
- Bush Calm and Clear essence to help you find your own time and space and encourage healthy contemplation. This can help you find the time to properly focus.
- Bush Meditation essence to help you awaken your spirituality and enhance your intuition and meditative powers. It can allow you to reach deeper into your religious or spiritual practices.
Are you serious about helping others? Get involved with your local red nose charity and help to boost donations. It is a great way to meet like-minded people and to do something good for someone else, and also fulfil the common need to be useful and worthy. If you feel that you yourself are not being acknowledged, that you have your own needs and there is no one helping you, then perhaps some Bush Abund essence can help. It can help you put poverty in perspective and allow you to trust that all will be well. It can help you to open up to receive help and to experience riches emotionally, mentally and perhaps physically.
As a homoeopath, and also using flower essences during my training in kinesiology, I have seen how well they work. They are gentle, yet deep. I frequently support my clients’ remedies with flower essences. I can recommend Bach and Bush flowers as powerful, trusted essences that I have experienced and prescribed.
If you have celebrated with too much food or alcohol, then check out my Christmas 2006 article for overindulgence. Nux vomica is the number one hangover remedy. Remember to keep your body hydrated.
Is your personal issue one that revolves around you wearing yourself out trying to help others? Do you constantly put others first without acknowledgement or true gratitude? If you suffer guilt, resentment, anger or any negative emotions attached to this, then, I would advise some serious contemplation about why you are putting yourself through this. Holding on to these feelings can lead to depression, insomnia, immune system degeneration and even disease. Talk to a counsellor, see a homoeopath, or visit a professional of your choice. Remember, you are the most important person to yourself, and you should always try to help yourself first. It puts you in a stronger position to help others, to enjoy your own life and to share happiness with others.
Enjoy the month of March, whatever you choose to do.
